Steve Kennedy is a Cape Cod artist who works in the “plein air” tradition. His commitment to plein air painting takes him outside for direct observation of his subject, no matter what the season. He refers to his style as “a painterly realism, “ and says of his paintings: “The light is the story. I consistently find myself drawn to scenes with strong patterns of light and shadow. Even the most mundane or ordinary views are extraordinary in the right light.” Paintings are usually completed in one to two sessions, excepting larger canvases. He paints mostly on the Outer Cape, and enjoys close proximity to Provincetown’s historic art colony.
Kennedy’s subjects usually include the older, more time worn elements of the New England area where he’s lived all his life – classic period buildings, rusty fishing boats or quiet streets at twilight. Kennedy favors early morning and late afternoon light, when the sunlight is stronger and long shadows help create a mood. He cites Edward Hopper as primary influence. He likes Hopper’s quote: “Editors wanted people running around flailing their arms. What I wanted to do was paint sunlight on the side of a house.”
